Why does Spotify wrapped feel like a personality test now?

Every year when Spotify Wrapped season falls upon us suddenly instagram becomes more judgemental than your mum at Christmas.

Is wrapped more than just data from the year? Has it become some kind of personality test? A public statement? Have you found yourself blasting more alternative music in the last few weeks of October in order to knock Taylor Swift off your top spot?

If so, you aren’t alone. There seems to be a fear of being basic when it comes to Wrapped and I get it, I too have fallen victim to the pressures of making my music taste look more interesting than it is. The truth is that the music you like is a reflection of who you are and the year you have had. My thoughts and prayers to anyone who had Conan Gray or Sombr at the top of their Wrapped, or anything by Phoebe Bridgers in your songs. It shows your style and who carried you through the year.

However, you’re not defined by your music taste and no one will remember who your top artist was by the end of December so you should be able to enjoy all sorts of genres, songs and albums without the fear of being judged.

While we are on the subject, did anyone else get incredibly offended by the age estimation? Why was Spotify trying to age me 40 years simply for having taste? What was I supposed to do, listen to KidsBop all year?

If it brings you any peace of mind, we are currently in no mans’ land until Spotify restarts their data collection on the 1st January so feel free to get your guilty pleasure artists out of your system. There is no right way to listen to music and even if you have the most basic music taste at least you’re not listening to it on Apple music.
