Pitch to Us

Pitching to an editor is a key skill you’ll need to master to break into the freelancing world. This year, Liberty Belle Magazine want you to pitch your ideas to us! Each section will still be uploading their content call outs to the Liberty Belle Contributors 2022/23 Facebook group each week, but we want to hear from you. Regardless of whether you’re a University of Sheffield student, come and write for our award-winning online publication and build up your portfolio.

We are a volunteer, student-led publication and unfortunately we cannot pay our contributors for their submissions.

This page should answer any questions you have, but please don’t hesitate to contact our Editor-in-Chief, Maddy Burgess, at editor.libertybellemag@gmail.com for more information.

Pitching Guidelines:

• The subject line of your email should be ‘PITCH: Your draft headline’. Make your draft headline stand out so our editors are drawn in to read your email.

• Begin your pitch with a short summary of your idea.

• If your piece includes interviews, who do you plan to speak to? Have you already reached out to them? Have they agreed to talk to you?

• Why is the piece timely? Why do people need to know about it now?

• Why are you the right person to write the piece?

• Give us an insight into who you are and what experience you have – you don’t need any previous experience to write for us, but we want to get to know our contributors! We’re more likely to reach out to you with opportunities down the line if we know more about you and your interests. Embedded links to your portfolio/website/other work are perfect.

Tips for writing a pitch:

• Make sure you have a clear idea (for example, if you want to write about the latest SS21 trends for the fashion section, that’s great – but what specific trends do you want to write about?)

• Be as concise as possible – bullet pointing or numbering your pitches is a great way to achieve this.

• Please don’t send our editors full drafts in the body of, or attached to, your initial email.

What happens after I’ve sent my pitch?

• Please give our editors time to respond to you. You should have received a response within five working days. If you haven’t heard back, send a polite follow up email. If you still haven’t received a response, email Maddy on editor.libertybellemag@gmail.com.

• One of our editors will email you back and if your pitch is accepted, they will give you a deadline, word count and let you know when the piece is scheduled to be published. If the deadline is too soon or you’re unhappy with the word count, please let them know – we want to work with you as best as we can.

• If the idea isn’t quite right for us, one of our editors will provide you with feedback and make suggestions for alternative publications it may be suitable for.

• After you’ve written the piece and emailed it over, our editors will get to work and upload it on the specified day. They’ll email you once it’s been uploaded with a link to where you can find it!

NB: When you email over your piece, please also attach any images you’d like us to include. These must be original or copyright free images – please refer to the images section of the Contributors’ Style Guide for more information. Don’t worry if you don’t have any as our editors can help you find some.

We’d love to see you sharing your articles on social media. Be sure to tag us on Instagram and Twitter using @libertybellemag! Your article will also be shared in a weekly round up on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, so keep an eye out.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask any of the Liberty Belle team using the email addresses provided at the start of the document.

We can’t wait to receive your emails – happy pitching!
