Which fashion trends are set to hit the block in 2021?

You’d think during the year of a global pandemic fashion trends would consist of sweatpants and old t-shirts. However, surprisingly, 2020 provided an array of new trends and 2021 is set to do the same. With the weather gradually getting warmer, it’ll be interesting to see what emerges from the fashion industry in SS21.

Flared and baggy jeans were an AW20 staple. Ranging from classic 70s flares to the wide legs of the 90s, these won’t be swapped out any time soon. Instead of being paired with sweatshirts, polo necks and layered tops, they’ll look great with neutral halter necks and patterned cami tops as summer approaches.

Headscarves are set to be a staple accessory, following the suit of flared jeans which will be sticking around. Drawing inspiration from the 50s and 60s, floral and boldly-patterned silk scarves will add a pop of colour to any outfit.

With the growing popularity of padded shoulders, oversized blazers will make the perfect addition to your SS21 wardrobe. Whether it’s a standout, pastel-coloured blazer, or encompasses neutral hues, it’s clear they are versatile and can be dressed up or down. I love how these effortlessly put together outfits appear when you throw on a blazer.

Street style, popularised on social media, has incorporated neutral tones recently, especially chocolate brown and nude. This is largely thanks to the constantly sold-out North Face brown puffer jacket, which may have been the most sought-after item of last season.

However, I think a new set of colours will rock the boat this spring. Soft pastels and bright neons will add a lot more colour to your wardrobe, according to the spring 2021 runways. Bold and impactful patterns will replace neutral tones.

Thanks to the likes of Instagram and TikTok, the popularity of Y2K fashion soared last year, transporting us back to the era of baguette bags, detailed camis and butterfly hair clips. This nostalgia will hopefully carry forward, adding more fun to fashion at a time when the world needs it.
