The trendiest coats this winter

Updated: Nov 19, 2021

The ‘Teddy Bear’

The cold, windy conditions of British winter provide the perfect excuse to wrap up in cosy clothing. One of my favourite ways to do this is by throwing on a 'Teddy Bear' coat.

Their soft, furry feel is enough to persuade anyone to make a purchase and unsurprisingly, they have made an appearance in the majority of high street shops this season.

However, for obvious ethical reasons, shoppers should ensure their coats are made of faux fur before splashing out. Being environmentally friendly should be at the forefront of everyone’s minds when making purchases.

The downside to these cosy coats is they are not very practical for rainy weather and, considering the UK climate, this might deter people from wearing them.

The ‘Puffer’

Most of us will have seen the array of North Face puffer coats available on the rails, especially after the response they received in AW20.

Well, it looks like they are set to make a return this year – and it's easy to see why.

With the versatility of colour choices, there is one to suit everyone – no matter your outfit.

The outer layer, usually made from a waterproof material like nylon or polyester, makes them easy to wear in all weather conditions. This allows the coat to be more durable and you get more wear for your money.

So, if you want to be equally sensible and fashionable, this coat may be the one for you.

The ‘Long-Coat’

These coats are perfect for those wanting to look sophisticated while remaining on-trend.

They come in all sorts of colours, patterns and materials, so whether you prefer bright red, faux fur, or classic monochrome, there will be a style to suit your taste.

For a more casual look, these coats can also be dressed down with a pair of trainers. While they come without a hood, these pieces are perfect for a windy November and can easily be layered with a hoodie beneath.

As the fashion industry searches for ways to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly, I recommend searching for these trends in charity shops or looking for stores that use recycled materials in their designs.

In charity shops, there is often only one of each item in stock, making the search for the perfect coat more difficult – but this makes finding the right one even more rewarding.

If you’re looking for a new jacket this year, be sure to balance the trends with the impact your purchase is having on the world around you.
