The best winter walks in Sheffield

In our current COVID times, a casual amble with a friend has become the ‘shall we grab a drink tonight?’ of socialising. During these winter months, our daylight hours are precious and not just for that much-needed vitamin D. That is why only top tier strolls will do.

No. 1 – Bolehill – S8 8SG

Come rain or shine (or snow), Bolehill provides effortless panoramic views of the skyline. It is definitely the location of choice for a more lowkey, ‘deep meaningful chat’ kind of walk with a friend and a flask of hot choc. Especially with the excellent selection of perch spots it provides; the craggy rocks away from the playground work perfectly for this. Get yourself to Bolehill to watch a beautiful, wintery sunrise. However, do be prepared for it to get a bit windy! It was a strong favourite of mine during quarantine and will remain so as I, like others, begin my decline into revision madness.

No. 2 – Endcliffe Park - S11 7AB

Much like the labyrinth, Endcliffe Park seems absolutely endless. Paths this way and that, and yet you never actually stray that far away from the roads that encapsulate it. Boasting beautiful and up-close natural elements, Endcliffe is the perfect park in which to lose yourself. As it is generally flat you can happily walk with little exertion and absorb the scenery while the traffic hums gently in the background. If you are one for a water element, then Endcliffe is definitely a go-to. There are two large duck-filled ponds and also the charming ‘Porter Brook’ which runs the entire length of the park. Due to its popularity, it tends to be relatively safe even after our current 3pm sunset.

No. 3 - Crookes Valley Park - S10 2TU

If ponds just don’t do it for you, then get yourself down to Crookes Valley Park, which boasts a large and often-used lake at it’s centre. Crookes Valley is another central park that provides sanctuary from the bustling centre. Unlike Bolehill, you descend in, following the wide paths that wind down to the lake, parallel to the sloping banks. For some, Crookes Valley Park is an end destination; somewhere to meet up with a group of friends or just generally sit. But if you enjoy a walk that allows you to explore each corner of the lake and people-watch while you do it, then definitely check out this park.

No. 4 – Botanical Gardens - S10 2LN

Not a typical location that many people think of for a winter walk, but do not be deceived by its name, the botanical gardens are still mesmerising in the chillier months. The glass pavilions look Disney-film-ready when coated in snow. By virtue of the fact that it is garden, it is always in exemplary condition and litter free. For fans of a more suburban walk, free of mud and worries that you might put your foot in some dog-doo, the Botanical Gardens are a clear winner. Get in there quick though, their closing time is 4pm during the winter!
