Sheffield is a city made vibrant by its independent creators, particularly the women that bring their passion and talent to the table. To celebrate the inspiring female creators during this Women’s History Month, here is a guide to some of Sheffield’s female-led small businesses who continue to pave the way for women in business.
Luce, the owner of Bambino, was like any excited aunt who loved shopping for her niece, but was disappointed to see there were hardly any ethically sourced fabrics in the market for baby clothes – so she decided to make her own. Bambino uses sustainable fabrics made out of 100 per cent cotton in minimalist designs which are pleasant on the eyes. These are printed on muslin blankets, bibs, bodysuits and more. Sustainable fabrics are always better for the environment because washing them prevents the release of toxic microfibres. Pure fabrics also ensure your baby is comfortable and snug in their new clothes. Bambino’s sustainable and ethical work is a step forward in being the responsible choice in Sheffield.
One would never imagine turning cutlery into jewellery, but that is exactly what Frankie had in mind. Most of her pieces are hand crafted from antique spoons, forks and knives into extravagant rings. On top of that, she upcycles antique pieces such as vintage cameras into creative lamps for display. Frankie’s work repurposes pieces that would have just been melted down into a pile of scrap. Instead, she crafts each and every one by bringing the life back into them to make them as good as new. Based in Sheffield, Frankie paved her way forward by thinking outside the box and breaking boundaries – they really are one of a kind.
What started out in a flat in Kelham Island turned into a thriving clothing business led by Nicola. Kelham Print goes by two words: fun and impulsive. Their hand-printed shirts and accessories showcase elements of pop culture. Nicola brings her own designs to life on t-shirts, tote bags, sweaters and more – all made to order meaning no item goes to waste. Nicola started out with a heat-press, cutting machine and some supplies while operating her small business on Etsy. Now Kelham Print has its own website where Nicola is set on only selling accessories that she would wear to a party. Most of the quotes printed on her designs have something worth taking away from. One of my favourites is ‘the grass is greener where you water it’.
