With lockdown and everyone stuck inside, it can be hard to maintain a positive mindset, especially in University accommodation when you are away from all of your home comforts.

However, there are ways to keep your mental health on track, pick yourself up and fight the isolation blues.

1. Call a friend

My personal favourite thing to do when I’m feeling down is to facetime or call my friends from home. In times like this we all need that human connection, even if it’s just a five-minute call with your mum, it can make a world of difference.

2. Have a pamper evening

If you aren’t feeling social enough for this, give yourself a pamper night: put a facemask on, watch your favourite movie and order a pizza. Sometimes you just need time to recharge your social battery, relax and have some ‘me time’.

3. Go for a walk

Another thing that always makes me feel better is going for a walk, especially through the Botanical Gardens. As simple as it sounds, walking around a pretty place and getting that fresh air can really lift your spirits. Exercise is also brilliant for your mental health, whether that’s going to the gym, for a run or even just doing a home workout.

5. Set a routine

A lot of people find isolation difficult as not going into University as much, or having a regular timetable, takes away their daily routine. It’s so easy to fall into a slump and to avoid this I would suggest investing in a weekly or daily planner. I find that my mental health has massively improved since doing so.

6. Have a flat movie night

The odds are that if you are feeling lonely, your flatmates will be too. Why not suggest a flat movie night? Everyone is in the same situation and need to look out for each other as best as we can.
