Starting university can be one of the most memorable, exciting experiences but it can also feel daunting, especially with all the events. With the new academic year finally underway, this guide will help you figure out the best way to approach university life, and ensure you have the fullest experience you possibly can.

Join a society - Joining a society is the easiest way to meet different people and get involved in university life. Universities have a broad array of societies and they are designed for anyone to join. Even if you don’t have any particular skills or hobbies, or the idea of joining a society seems nerve-wracking, remember they are more casual than you might think, so don’t be afraid to try something new and put yourself out there.

Explore the city - A mistake many students make in their first year is to just fall in to a student bubble, and never establish a proper connection with the city they’re living in. Although it may seem tempting, and sometimes a good thing, to spend your free afternoons in your student accommodation relaxing, it’s so important to go into the local community and make the most of the city. It will make university feel more like a home, rather than just the place you study. If you’re in Sheffield, make sure to check out our other articles highlighting the best places to go.

Try to be open - University is a unique place, where thousands of people have moved away from home, been thrown together and can sometimes feel lost. The first few weeks will inevitably be hectic, and although sometimes it is a good idea to rest and relax by yourself, do try to keep an open mindset, and say yes to things you wouldn’t normally say yes to. Your best memories and best friends will be made at the most unexpected times and places, so be open to invitations and trying new things.

Above all, make sure you slow down when needed, and try not to compare your university experience to other people's. Good luck!
