This year’s inauguration saw the beginning of a new era for American politics. After a turbulent four years, the weight has been lifted off the shoulders of Americans – and the rest of the world for that matter. However, among the vows and great speeches, fashion also took centre stage.
Joe and Jill Biden
President Joe Biden, the man of the moment, wore a blue suit by American designer Ralph Lauren. It was well coordinated with his mask, which was made out of the same material as his overcoat. His attire complemented his wife, now First Lady, Jill Biden, who wore a baby blue tweed coat which was laced and had beautiful pearl detailing at the collar. Designed by Alexandra O’Neill, who founded Markarian, this outfit was custom-made. Even the details right down to her mask and gloves made a subtle yet a classy statement.
Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff
As the first black, female Vice President, Kamala Harris is a powerhouse. She represents a much-needed change in politics and I can’t wait to see what she achieves in her new position. Kamala wore a simple yet daring purple suit. Why? Because the simple cut, which suited her figure perfectly, made her stand out from the crowd. Designed by black designer Christopher John Rogers, the piece became a metaphor in itself as it reaffirmed the importance of black voices. Known for his bold colour choice, the designer ensured this outfit had the WOW factor it needed. Doug Emhoff also wore a suit by Ralph Lauren; the simple, dark suit complemented the Vice President’s outfit, yet allowed her to stand out as she should.
Michelle Obama
Let’s not forget the icon that is Michelle Obama. The former First Lady looked striking in a burgundy jumper, trousers and cashmere overcoat, teamed with a golden belt to show off her figure. Her black mask and gloves ensured the burgundy components of this look took centre stage. She looked gorgeous in these Sergio Hudson pieces, which made sure Michelle had a silhouette everyone would remember.
Bernie Sanders
The man, the meme, the legend – Bernie Sanders. It was evidently freezing in Washington, despite the winter sun making an appearance. Sanders’ mittens were completely justified, but it was the way he was sat which has the world in hysterics. But who made these mittens? Jen Ellis, a local teacher from Sanders’ home state, gave them to him over two years ago. They’re made of repurposed wool and fleece from recycled bottles, and it's nice to see sustainability incorporated into his look.
For all you meme fans who’ve been photoshopping Sanders into photos from Twilight and Mean Girls, you’ll be pleased to hear there’s now merch for the meme. You read that right, merch. The sweatshirt is made of 100% combed ring-spun organic cotton and 100% of the money made will be donated to Meals on Wheels Vermont. Who knew memes could make a fashion statement?
Little did we know that the inauguration would become a fashion event, and Bernie Sanders would steal the show. Not only did this day symbolise the power of fashion, but a step in the right direction for America.
