How to style blue monochrome

Monochrome is among the most underrated fashion styles. When done right, it's a trend that turns heads! For anyone daring enough to embrace colour, be sure to keep reading. We’re going to work towards an unforgettable blue moment using my top five tips for styling monochrome garments.

Tones and shades

Firstly, arguably the most important step, decide if you’re going to play with different or the same shades of blue. If you plan on using the same tone, make sure they’re an exact match and the textures compliment one another. There’s nothing more tasteless than using mismatched fabrics. When attempting a monochromatic outfit for the first time, I’d recommend opting for different tones.

What’s the occasion?

Identifying the occasion will help you pinpoint which items and fabrics will be most appropriate. As a rule of the thumb, fabrics like silk and satin are best for dressier occasions – although they can also be dressed down for semi-casual settings too. Whereas, cotton and polyester are favourable for casual and semi-casual situations.

Play with textures

Textures can take an outfit to the next level if you’re ready to embrace the craziness. A woolen top and sequined trousers in a similar shade of blue, layered with a faux fur coat, is the perfect way to step outside your comfort zone. Mix, match and see what works best for you.

Accessorize

Simply adding a piece of jewellery, a belt or a bag is guaranteed to complete your look. Play it safe with blue accessories or opt for a bolder look by implementing orange, blue’s most complimentary colour. If orange isn’t your first choice, try out these alternatives: pink is best paired with light blue, and grey, peach and dark blue are best paired with baby blue.

Final touches

Don’t forget to decide on a makeup look – a dramatic cat eye is always a favourable choice. If you’re feeling brave enough, play around with orange and blue hues of eye shadow.

Incorporating blue monochrome items into your 2021 wardrobe may be the change you've been searching for. This is the year to step outside your comfort zone and be playful with fashion. Once you've started experimenting with colour you won't look back.
