How to stay fashionable at uni

Looking good means feeling good, but when you’re struggling with the stress of university life, that often doesn’t come as a top priority. When exams are looming or assignments are piling up, throwing on a pair of sweatpants can seem far more appealing than putting together a stylish outfit. However, fashion doesn’t have to seem so daunting or optional.

We’ve all experienced the frustration of opening a closet full of clothes and still feeling like you have “nothing to wear”. A quick fix is to start investing in quality basics, which are perfect for layering during the colder months. These include anything from

tank tops and long sleeves to turtlenecks and long-lasting jeans.Outfits don’t always have to be spectacular, a simple combination of jeans and a basic top can be both chic and comfortable. Sometimes less is more, too many patterns or textures can ruin an outfit.

A great way to look put together is by identifying your “best colours” through a colour analysis, which can be done online or in person. Understanding which tones enhance your natural features can make a massive difference, transforming a plain outfit into one that truly compliments your skin tone. This is an investment that pays off for a lifetime, and I definitely recommend it.

During draining weeks, when studying takes priority over fashion, having one easy, stylish outfit ready can be a lifesaver. Perhaps your favourite pair of jeans teamed with a warm jumper, something quick and easy that you know works and makes you feel confident. Preparing a couple of outfits in advance can always help you avoid the morning rush.

As the weather gets colder and winter approaches, we tend to prioritise staying warm. Just because the days become duller, doesn’t mean your outfits should too! One of my favourite winter hacks is styling a skirt with fleece-lined tights, a nice change from jeans and super easy to find online or in-stores. Layering is key in the colder months, and stocking up on winter accessories that you love can make a significant difference. A vibrant scarf or a cute pair of earmuffs can always brighten up any outfit.

You don’t have to be the most fashionable person, what truly matters is that you feel comfortable and confident in what you wear. University is the best place to practise self-expression, and finding clothes that match your personality, budget, and lifestyle is the most important thing.
