How to decorate your flat on a budget this Christmas

It’s December already and this year I am feeling more Christmassy than ever and cannot wait to decorate my bedroom and lounge to give my uni home a cosy Christmas feel! So here are some ideas on how to spice up your student house to truly get you into the festive spirit.

Fairy Lights

Fairy lights are essential for your university bedroom all year round, but especially during the holiday season. As the weather gets colder and the evenings get darker, fairy lights are a crucial asset to give your flat or house that extra cosy feeling. I have especially found that fairy light curtains are the best at transforming a room (as well as creating the most stunning backdrop for Instagram pictures!)

You can purchase these from Amazon, eBay, Typo or Urban Outfitters (they are on sale right now at Urban Outfitters so grab yours quick!)

Window Stickers

One of my favourite decorations to add to my bedroom around Christmas time are window stickers! A couple of years ago I found a huge pack of snowflake stickers at B&M, and I have re-used them every year since. They are a simple way to add a little something extra to a room whilst also giving the illusion that it’s snowing outside, what more could you want!

If you are looking for a way to jazz up your bedroom or flat, without upsetting your landlord, Christmas stickers are the way!

Paper Chains

Now, this is probably the cheapest way to decorate your accommodation, but quite possibly the most fun! Paper chains and bunting (a lightweight loosely woven fabric used chiefly for flags and festive decorations) are so easy to make and, they are a great activity to do with your flatmates. You can find loads of tutorials on YouTube and Pinterest and get super creative with your designs using paint, pens and stickers!

Paper chains and bunting are also great because you can re-use them all year round, re-decorate them for every season or birthday event and they really brighten up any room!

Christmas Trees

Christmas trees can be expensive to buy and to decorate, but don’t worry there are some ways to get around this when you are a student on a budget! One hack is to buy lots of tinsel and decorate your rooms with it like bunting. This gives any room a Christmassy feeling and tinsel is super cheap.

Alternatively, you can always wrap anything in tinsel to create the illusion of a tree – I remember in my first year of university we decorated a traffic cone with tinsel and pretended that was our Christmas tree – so get creative!

But if you wanted to splash the cash a little bit, you can buy mini–Christmas Tree’s at affordable prices from most shops and supermarkets too.

I am so excited to go Christmas shopping, see the Christmas lights and walk around all the Christmas markets this year, but I think the first step is to get into the holiday spirit is decorating your house!
