Here's how you can have a work, university and social life balance

Updated: Nov 5, 2021

At university we often hear the phrase ‘work hard, play hard’ – but what does this mean as a modern-day university student?

Many people still don’t know how to implement this lifesaving mantra into the day-to-day. Students everywhere find themselves completing work last minute, forgetting to do that piece of seminar reading – or worst of all – forgetting about their devilishly early 9am lecture after a night of clubbing.

University doesn’t have to be like this and with practise, you can reinvigorate your calamitous routine into something that'll have all your coursemates jealous of how organised you are.

1. Before bed, make a to-do-list

It’s common for everyone to get a wave of motivation before bedtime, so why not maximise this and plan for the next day? That way, you'll be prepared to begin the day fresh, with a clear action plan.

2. Calendar everything!

As soon as any events are planned, whether social, job or university-related, write them down under the relevant dates. This will be a saving grace and will enable you to keep track of anything coming up that week.

3. Socialise, but to an extent

Especially since Covid restrictions were lifted, it’s been very easy to become enthralled by the ongoing socialising – but sometimes you just have to say no. Ultimately, your academics are your priority and it's important you devote most of your time to them.

4. Have a study buddy... or two!

A group study session and working together can make it a lot easier to feel both committed and motivated. It also provides a great opportunity to enjoy the company of people who you may not have had time to hang out with that week.

5. Remember, you still need a break

How you care for yourself internally will certainly impact your mindset and approach to life, so remember to look after your health. Through good food habits, adequate sleep and exercise, your body will have more energy to function, allowing each day to run more efficiently.

There is no perfect formula for balancing your work, university and social lives, but these tips offer an excellent template, which will certainly reduce any burden you are carrying.
