3 sustainable fashion brands owned by black women

It’s important to do as much as you can to support the Black Lives Matter movement. Whether that’s signing petitions, donating or educating yourself, it will make a significant difference.

Another way you can support the movement is through supporting black-owned businesses. Some amazing businesses are now getting the exposure they deserve and these three fashion brands are no exception. They are paving the way for the future of sustainable fashion.

Local European:

This brand has worked hard towards introducing sustainable practises into their production process. Alexandra Bunch, the founder, hopes to inspire their customers and fellow designers to follow in their footsteps and be mindful of what they are consuming. All of their pieces are made from headstock fabrics, which are unused materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. Their main aims are to reduce textile waste, save energy and lower their carbon footprint. Their new in collection has already sold out, which included their champagne mini slip dress which was a hit on Twitter.

Elia Vintage:

Elia Vintage sells vintage and pre-loved items. Customers have to be quick to get their hands on them, as they only sell one of each. Customers are encouraged to sign up to their mailing list to be updated on new arrivals, events and special promotions, so they don’t miss out. They also offer a styling service, which is great for those who need guidance on which pieces would suit them and which items would look best styled together. This brand is great for achieving a unique style that you wouldn’t be able to achieve by shopping on the high street.

Brother Vellies:

Founded in 2013, Aurora James had the goal of keeping traditional African design practices and techniques alive. This is creating and sustaining artisanal jobs. Their luxury items are one-of-a-kind pieces that will remain in your wardrobe forever. Aurora designs them in Brooklyn, but they are handcrafted globally, from Nairobi to New York. The brand aims to empower the culture’s history, while also paving the way for a more sustainable future in the industry.
