Face masks: The ultimate lockdown fashion trend

2020 has been revolutionary, but we are finally taking hygiene more seriously and understand the importance of social distancing. Fashion has always found a way to transfigure simple and core essentials into statement pieces, and this year face masks do exactly that. Here are some ways you can style your mask safely and with panache.

Safety and comfort come first: It is bad enough you have to hide that gorgeous shade of matte lipstick from the world, you do not want to wear a mask that keeps bothering you or fails to keep you safe from the virus too. Instead, opt for a silk or cotton mask to keep you safe and to avoid any annoyance.

Denim masks: Washed denim is a soft material, often mixed with cotton, which feels gentle against the skin. The best part is, as long as you own a pair of jeans, a denim mask is guaranteed to work well with your outfit and showcase a trendy vibe.

Silk masks: Who doesn't love the feel of soft silk, sheathing the skin from the virus and the possibility of developing ‘maskne'? Silk is cooling on the skin and absorbs less moisture than cotton, making it perfect for acne-prone and oily skin. In bold colours, they are a style staple. They can be an expensive investment, so ensure you pick one that you will be able to style with many outfits.

Face mask dress: An innovative, hassle-free piece is the face mask dress. PrettyLittleThing has made life convenient by releasing a dress with a built in face mask. If you are prone to forgetting your mask or want to ensure it coordinates with your outfit, this could be ideal for you.

Make a statement: Nothing screams ‘statement look’ more than bold prints and patterns. Since you cannot show off your makeup, show off your mask instead. Checkered, pride-print, neon-coloured, or polka dot patterned masks are the easiest way to glam up your outfit. Want to go one step further? Opt for a sequined mask to bring out some bling, or a skull-patterned mask to embrace your humorous side. Go big or go home!

Keep it classic: Don't fancy the glam? Keep it simple with classic tones. A black face mask can be styled with anything and will be easy to find. Browse through Etsy for some versatile neutral-toned and patterned masks - you will be supporting small businesses in the process!

Contrast or coordinate colours: You can also colour code your look; it will make your ensemble stand out and shows that you have put in effort into it. Pair a saffron yellow garment with a baby blue mask and you are good to go. Alternatively, match your mask to the most dominant colour in your outfit. If you are wearing a burgundy dress, shield your face with a matching burgundy mask.

The mask trend is thriving, so go ahead and experiment. Add some colour to a basic look, make it dramatic with sparkles and embellishments, or stick to neutral tones and patterns. Be as creative and confident as you like, just remember to stay safe.
