Coperni’s spray-on gown was a fashion moment to remember

Updated: Oct 21, 2022

While the endless streams of parading models often blur into one by the end of fashion month, it’s guaranteed that every season will deliver a truly unforgettable moment. For S/S22 this was Jacquemus’ beachfront runway, while A/W22 delivered Valentino’s spectacular sea of pink. This S/S23 there was the spray-on dress.

Adorned by supermodel Bella Hadid for Parisian label Coperni, this Paris Fashion Week saw the runway’s first ever spray-on gown. While spray-on fashion isn’t a new invention (the concept was first thought of by Fabrican Limited in 2003) Coperni’s show marks the first time the spray-on process was captured on the runway.

This isn’t the first time Coperni has captured the fashion scene with its unique and tech-forward ideas either. Just this spring Coperni’s glass ‘swipe’ bag was named the it-bag of the year by esteemed fashion publications like British Vogue. This came after the glass accessory was adorned by the biggest names in the fashion industry from Kylie Jenner to Doja Cat.

The show itself was as mystifying as it was unique. After a string of models in classic black and white gowns stormed Coperni’s runway, Bella emerged in nothing but white lingerie. Adding to the front row’s curiosity, two technicians approached a display of painting equipment, hinting at the artful show that was about to take place. The technicians sprayed Bella in a skin-tight white gown that she proceeded to grace the runway in.

The fashion moment was reminiscent of Alexander Mcqueen’s S/S99 show during which Shalom Harlow was sprayed in a multitude of colours in the middle of the runway. Whether Coperni’s creative director, Sebastian Meyer, derived inspiration from Mcqueen’s show is unconfirmed, but the two show’s similarities were hard to ignore.

While she may have looked her professional calm self on the runway, Bella couldn’t contain her excitement towards the experience on Instagram. The star told her followers the fashion show left her ‘speechless’ (and we couldn’t have put it better ourselves).
