Ariana Grande's 'Positions' music video is AW20 excellence

When I first watched the music video for Ariana Grande’s ‘Positions’, the title track from her sixth studio album, my attention was instantly captured by the outfits. Styled by Mimi Cuttrell, the music video depicts Ariana Grande as the President of the United States and features a wardrobe perfect for the AW20 season.

TikTok helped to popularise the corset this season, with users fawning over the Vivienne Westwood ones in particular. Ariana wears a white Dion Lee corset, which is no exception to the simplistic colour palette we see throughout the video. As it is white, our attention is drawn to the top’s construction - a nod to the admired patchwork top of this summer, where the stitching was the focal point of each garment.

We see Ariana wearing an oversized blazer with a mini skirt, pearl earrings and a large bow in her hair. The oversized blazer has been in trend for the past couple years and its popularity reached new heights this season. Keeping in with the oversized nature of the outfit, her pearl earrings, bow and platform heels stand out just as much as the blazer.

Coordinating loungewear sets were a staple during the first lockdown and the appeal of matching sets remain. They are a simple way to appear put together and the orange set in the video exhibits this easy sophistication. Orange is the first pop of colour Ariana is seen in, but her black cardigan, knee high boots and tights help to tone down the outfit.

It is undeniable that Jackie Kennedy was the style inspiration, made obvious by Ariana’s A-line coat. Tailored clothing is on trend and one of the easiest ways to appear sophisticated, which is achieved by the white coat. The use of an all-white outfit is reminiscent of the popularity of monochromatic outfits; similar to matching sets, monochromatic garments tie an outfit together.

The incorporation of AW20 trends in the ‘Positions’ video not only provides an exciting spectacle, but endless inspiration for our outfit choices this season.
