Are rapid trend cycles leading to the devastation of our planet?

Fashion trends are evolving uncontrollably, making it increasingly difficult to keep up. Have you ever felt like you've just caught on to the latest must-have piece, only to find it's already passed? 

Thanks to TikTok, Instagram, and other social media platforms, fashion trends seem to emerge and burn out faster than ever before. As these trend cycles accelerate, I begin to question: are these short-lived trends worth pursuing? Are fashion trends changing too quickly for us to keep up? Are social media platforms simply luring us into an endless cycle of over-consumption and a loss of individuality?

Remember the obsession over Adidas Superstars? Back in 2016, you couldn't scroll through your Instagram or Pinterest feed without spotting a pair of those classic black and white trainers. They were a staple in everyone's wardrobe. Fast forward to the following year, and those once-iconic shoes became more of a nostalgic throwback than a fashion essential, virtually disappearing from everyone's wardrobes. Why? Because trends have moved on—and they will continue to do so, largely thanks to social media.

While fashion trends once typically lasted an entire season or longer, TikTok has dramatically accelerated this timeline. Now, we witness micro-trends that explode in popularity for a few months—or even just weeks—before being replaced by the next big thing. Take the rise of "it" trainers, for instance. Today, it's all about the New Balance 550s or Adidas Sambas, but in a few months, these could be replaced by the next trainer release, making me resist the temptation of ordering the newly popular shoes that will die out in the next few months. The truth is, trying to keep up with these ever-changing trends is exhausting. Constantly chasing the latest viral fashion item can pressure us into continually refreshing our wardrobe. Is it really worth the effort?

This pressure to keep buying creates a darker side to this trend-chasing: over-consumption. When trends die out, sadly, many end up relegated to the back of our wardrobes—or worse, discarded, creating more waste. This fast fashion cycle isn't just detrimental to our finances; it's devastating for the environment. The fashion industry is one of the biggest contributors to pollution, with vast quantities of unsold or discarded clothing ending up in landfills each year.

While we should wear what makes us feel confident, TikTok trends can make us question our own opinions, leading to a loss of individuality. I’ve seen comments like “What are we wearing this winter?” as if we all need to follow the same trend. While it’s fun to experiment with new styles, it’s equally important to embrace what we truly love rather than just following the crowd.

At the end of the day, fashion should be enjoyable. As Blair Waldorf aptly put it, "Fashion is the most powerful art there is. It's movement, design, and architecture all in one. It shows the world who we are and who we'd like to be."
