Advice Column: Ask Becky!

Updated: Nov 19, 2021

Rebecca McPhillips' column is dedicated to helping readers tackle the dilemmas they face as young adults.

Whether you’re a fresher trying to establish a good social life, or a third year trying to balance your coursework and side hustles, this column will be a safe space to discuss anything and everything – and will hopefully help you in your next steps.

Hi reader!

Welcome to Liberty Belle Magazine's first advice column.

I’ll start with the basics. My name is Rebecca, 22 years of age, and just started my first year as a journalism student – though I did my foundation year at the University of Sheffield so have already been here for a while. I don’t plan on writing about myself much at all in this monthly segment, but I thought it’s only polite for me to introduce myself in the first one.

I have a blog and started building my portfolio around four years ago, writing for online magazines and going for very ambitious jobs at Channel 4 and Vice. Though I got a couple of interviews, it turns out having a degree is pretty vital in landing a role.

On my way to university, like any other student, I made many mistakes, both in work and study scenarios. But I hope to use all of those lessons and turn them into advice for you all to gain from, which was my inspiration for starting a column with Liberty Belle Magazine.

Every three weeks, the magazine will set up a space on Instagram for you all to send in anonymous questions, dilemmas and topics. They can be about absolutely anything, from your university to social life. What you want to read, you'll see – based on popular requests, we will choose a topic or two, and I'll advise you the best I can.

Nothing is off-limits. Ask about your worries, heartaches, struggles balancing life and uni, how to reply to that text – everything is anonymous and will be generalised as much as necessary.

You can submit your topics, dilemmas and questions using this Google Form. I look forward to receiving your submissions and we'll catch up in three weeks.
