A look back at London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week (LFW) was both a cutting-edge celebration of art and a unifying response to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The uncertainty of whether the shows would take place during the UK's ten-day mourning period inspired designers to support one another to make this fashion week one for the books.

Here's a rundown of the week’s most memorable moments.

In presenting over 100 designers and their collections, LFW was the place to discover fashion’s brightest vision for Spring/Summer 2023. The runways represented a bold, fresh outlook, combining hazy elegance with sharp angles.

The sequinned slip dresses in springtime colours by Naeem Anthony for Helen Anthony are the epitome of this bright vision. So are RIXO’s popping and playful two-pieces of the Postcards from Goa collection which promise graceful silhouettes for next spring.

In stark contrast, Daniel W Fletcher introduced sharper shapes and harsher colours exemplified by the frayed harness-like black vest. Chopova Lowena’s S/S23 loud and colourful collection also stood out, it was inspired by sportswear as well as folklore.

These designers all advocated for sustainability by showing their eco-friendly garments are the height of fashion. This made London the place to be for a progressive and much-needed conversation on the issue of eco-friendly fashion.

Naturally, the topic of the late Queen seeped through the runway shows. To honour her,

Richard Quinn had models carry crowns and veils on their heads. The designer, applauded for his printed textiles, was the first to receive the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design and was even granted a front row visit by the Queen herself back in 2018.

JW Anderson thanked the monarch via a silky T-shirt dress and Harris Reed had his closing model, Lily McMenamy, carry Lillies of the Valley (Her Majesty’s favourite flower).

Inclusivity was at the heart of London Fashion Week as it set out not to limit its guestlist to the fashion elite. From the 6th to the 13th of October all Londoners are welcome to attend talks, workshops, and live performances advocating for inclusivity and consciousness during London Fashion Week. This way, the city can enjoy fashion for a little while longer.
