A day at the Runway Idol auditions

Updated: Apr 30, 2022

On Sunday I was given the great opportunity to attend the first set of auditions for Runway Idol and get a sneak peek into who will be modelling this year. I have to say, it’s already setting itself up to be a brilliant evening.

Runway Idol is a Sheffield based catwalk fashion show that raises money for charity. The charities this year are the Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Mind the mental health charity. It’s Sheffield’s biggest fashion show and will take place on 5th August this year at Hillsborough Stadium.

The unique thing about Runway Idol, that I quickly learned through watching the auditions, is that it’s really diverse and inclusive. The models come in all shapes, sizes and ages and no previous modelling experience is required. It’s a really fresh and empowering take on modelling and gives people an opportunity they otherwise might not have had.

Organiser, James Clarke said: “I wanted nice people to model. It’s the first time we’ve gone with the same charity two years in a row. Mental health has always been a big thing to me and I think last year, with Covid, it’s just even more important. Out of all the charities we’ve done over the years I’ve never felt a reaction as strong as this one towards a charity.”

The audition process was very laid back and informal. The models came in, spoke a little about themselves, why they want to take part and what the charities mean to them. They also showcased two outfits; one that is their normal style and one that is a beachwear look, that they had a go at walking a catwalk in. Although some had modelled before, none of the auditionees had ever done a catwalk before, but they all smashed it.

When asked why she wanted to take part, one of the models said: “It looks like it has a really good vibe and energy. It’s not just a catwalk for catwalk's sake.”

As well as eight different themed walks, there will also be charity speakers and guest models. One of the most emotional themes of the show is set to be where the models wear something that represents them and their story.

Tickets go on sale in a month and are only £10, you can keep up to date with the show and their Instagram, @RunwayIdol.
