Why Ncuti Gatwa’s casting could save Doctor Who

After the 14th Doctor was revealed last week, it is clear this historic casting is the breath of fresh air fans need to truly enjoy Doctor Who.

The casting of Rwandan-born actor Ncuti Gatwa, as one of the most cherished characters of all time, is something people could only have dreamed of when the show first aired - and it has been a long time coming.

Gatwa is also the first Doctor to lead the series under the exciting return of esteemed writer Russell T Davies, with the quintessentially British show developing the character's representation to that of the British population - something it has often ignored to do.

And now, after previously finding success in Netflix sensation Sex Education, fans are intrigued and excited to see what Gatwa has in store as he promises to take the role in his 'own direction'.

Speaking about the role, he said: “This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same."

This announcement has also been followed by the news of David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s highly-anticipated return. The fun and lively characters will go perfectly alongside Gatwa’s bubbly personality, and fans on social media can't wait to see them return!

For most people in Britain, Doctor Who was a huge part of their childhood. But since Russell T Davies stopped writing the show, it has been hard to remain loyal.

In 2010, Steven Moffat took over as Executive Producer following the fame of hit BBC series, Sherlock. Over the eight years Moffat held the position, many people stopped watching - but now with Russell T Davies taking the reins once more, there is hope that the show will return to British childhoods for years to come.
