Three TV shows to watch this season

It’s that time of year again where the air is crisp and darkness drags on. As Halloween approaches, so does the desire to watch cosy shows to match the cosy vibes. There are a few tv series which manage to exceed expectations when it comes to the dark and haunting.

1. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Netflix’s morbid remake of the classic teenage show is based on the comic book series by Archie Horror and perfectly encapsulates all that is witchery, ghostly and devilish. This series is short and not-so-sweet, however, it is packed with plot twists you don’t see coming. In contrast with the original version, the adaptation is horror-based, and is a visually pleasing, creepy watch for paranormal lovers. More importantly, who can resist a sassy, talking cat?

2. American Horror Story

FX’s American Horror Story is a one of a kind horror series which delivered many shock-factor sequences when it first aired. More popular and notorious seasons such as Asylum and Coven were huge hits, and the show consists of 12 seasons so far (plenty to get stuck into for the spooky season).

Coven revolves around a group of young and gifted witches who enrol in a school where they form a sisterhood. Jessica Lange delivers a magnificent performance, leading the other actors in forming a unique season with plenty of unexpected turns. There is also a significant amount of gore, if that’s your thing.

Asylum, the first season of the series, consists of memorable characters residing  in an eerie hospital for the mentally challenged. The ending episode, however, is completely unexpected, and leaves you asking plenty of questions. (No spoilers.)

3. The Haunting of Bly Manor

The standalone series in Mike Flanagan’s horror anthology is considered tamer  than both its predecessor, The Haunting of Hill House, and newly released series The Fall of the House of Usher, which aired in 2023.  The Haunting of Bly Manor accurately evokes the horror element associated with Flanagan’s work, however, this story delves deeper into the personal lives of the characters and their emotions.  If you prefer a lighter horror which retains jump scares and loud sounds, this could be your next watch.

Whether you have a penchant for the gothic, a guilty pleasure for all that is grotesque, or  prefer surprise cliffhangers, there is something for everyone in this list. It’s time to kick back  and get the winter blankets out.
