The top 5 makeup trends of 2020

2020 has been an eventful year, if we’re putting it lightly, and so for many of us makeup has been our way to escape reality and to pass time. The experimentation over the quarantine periods have meant that trends have been in no little demand, but here are what I believe to be some of the best beauty trends of 2020.

1. Two-Tone Hair

One of the most consistent trends of 2020 has been two-tone hair. It first began at the beginning of the year with bleaching and/or colouring the front two strands of the hair, with celebrities like Dua Lipa partaking in the trend. As the year developed, celebrities like Billie Eilish developed the two-tone trend, changing it so that up to half their hair had been dyed another colour. This drastic change created the current hair ‘under-dye’ trend we see going around currently, reminiscent of the 2000s.

2. Shaved Brows

The trend isn't the half grown brows themselves, but instead how shaving them off allows you to re-draw your brows to shape the face in any way you want. By shaving the end of them (or concealing them, if you can't commit) beauty influencers have been able to redraw their brows in any way to suit their features. Typically, they are drawn to look more straightened, creating the desired ‘face lift’ effect.

3. Euphoria Inspired Makeup

TV show Euphoria (2019) blew up this year, along with its extravagant dreamy makeup. The uniqueness of the show led influencers to take to the internet in order to re-create and adapt these looks. Glitter, gems and bright colours are key features of this trend, completely subverting the stereotypical everyday look.

4. Mullets

The mullet hairstyle has made its big comeback; and this time it's not just men rocking this 80s look, but women too! Androgyny and gender neutralism have been becoming more embraced in recent years, and this hairstyle demonstrates it perfectly. Celebrities such as Miley Cyrus helped popularise it this year, ironically taking after celebrities like Billy Ray Cyrus who popularised it in the eighties.

5. Fluffy brows

On the complete flip side of the bold trends previously mentioned, fluffy natural brows have become widely popularised this year. Taking over the arched ‘Instagram’ brows, these natural brushed up brows have become the signature brow look of 2020. There is often just little product used, and only a spoolie and some soap/gel are used to shape them upwards. This natural look is not only less time consuming, but means we can stop obsessively over plucking our brows to get the perfect look; the messier the better!
