The rise of the 90's: Beauty trends to re-fall in love with this year

Updated: Oct 4, 2023

From blue frosty eyeshadow to butterfly clips, 90's beauty trends were playful and glamorous. The TV and media presented us with our 90s icons who’s striking looks have made a major resurgence – a dream for makeup and hair lovers, like myself. From ‘The Rachel’ cut to dramatic lips, here are my favourite beauty comebacks that I believe we will be seeing all year round.

My personal favourite returning trend has to be the C-cut, or what many of you may know as face-framing layers. It was popularised in the 90's by the appearance of Jennifer Anniston in the 90’s sitcom show, Friends, hence its other name, ‘The Rachel’ cut. This style is elegant in body and shape, making the hair appear thicker and more voluminous.

These layers can be dramatised (and should I say, made even more 90's) through a styling trend known as the 90’s blowout. In a flashback to the 90s, the world swooned over Cher from the movie Clueless and her iconic blowout and layers. It is a timeless and romantic style that I adore and look forward to seeing throughout the year.

Another starring trend of the 90’s was hair accessories. Think butterfly clips, claw clips, scrunchies and headbands. The claw clip is a simple style that adds an effortless yet classy touch to any look and, just as the other accessories do, they can be in any shape or colour to add personality. These choices would bring any outfit to life and the obsession for them is back!

The 90’s beauty era was full of pastels; from ice blue eyeshadows to baby pink blush and frosted lips. I do however have to pay homage to the grunge looks of the 90s, especially to the dark and sultry grunge liner. This is applied with the smudging of the liner and looks striking with a bold lip – think Winona Ryder.

The revival of slick backed up-dos have too left me in awe! Tyra Banks’ slicked-back high ponytail owned the show, presenting a strong and stunning look. It has won the hearts of the public again, and I believe will continue as a powerful, polished look going forward.
