The black-owned businesses you need to know about for your next beauty fix

Updated: Nov 8, 2022

The end of October marked the end of Black History Month, but that doesn’t mean we must stop supporting deserving Black-owned businesses. I have highlighted some of my favourites below, which I cannot recommend enough.

Dipped in Hunnee cosmetics sells all things makeup and is very affordable. My favourite product is their lip-glosses that come packaged in adorable honey pot cases - so original! They also sell eyelashes, eyeshadow palettes, eyeliner and a wealth of other cosmetics. All their products are vegan, cruelty-free, and handmade in the UK. I would highly encourage you to have a look at their website and treat yourself.

Miss Kay Kollection is one of the most affordable sites for skin care. They sell body scrubs, oils and hydrating lip balms amongst many other products. They also sell accessories such as durags and bonnets; perfect for protecting your hair at night! This is another business that prioritises having vegan, cruelty-free and handmade products. A Gift Hamper from this website would make a great Christmas gift for a friend that needs a pamper.

This website is an absolute must! Black Girl Sunscreen by Rich Skxn is the only sunscreen I use. Now we have entered the winter months, you may think that sunscreen isn’t a must, but I assure you it is. Wearing sunscreen all year round ensures your skin is healthy and happy. It’s hard to find sunscreen that doesn’t wash out black and brown skin. I find that this sunscreen doesn’t turn white as soon as I step outside and actually makes my skin feel moisturised and protected. Rich Skxn is currently the only online retailer for melanin-rich skin in the UK. They have a range of skincare, so I encourage you to have a look at their website. Admittedly, some products are pricey, but the Black Girl Sunscreen is affordable and lasted me about 4 months.

Now, this might not be a cosmetics retailer, but I couldn’t help but include it on the list. If you want stunning jewelry that is eye-catching and unique, Milli London is the site for you. The products are super affordable and would make the perfect Christmas gift for friends and family. They sell a wide variety of jewelry from watches to anklets and the designs are so creative; you are bound to find something that suits your style. Whether you’re looking for a statement piece or an everyday small piece, this shop has it all.

I also wanted to mention local shops right here in Sheffield that you can visit. Julia Hair Cosmetics is located on Pinstone Street and Ali’s Hair and Cosmetics is located in Moor Market. They sell all the hair and beauty essentials you’ll need, especially if you have type 4 hair. I personally recommend visiting Julia’s if you struggle to find the specific products or brands you love. It has everything from hair extensions, braid spray, curl cream, lip-gloss etc.

If you are in search of more black-owned businesses to explore and support, @blackownedsheffield on Instagram does a great job of showcasing them all year round. Be sure to give them a follow.
