REVIEW: This Is Going To Hurt (2022)

Updated: Mar 12, 2022

If you are looking to watch a series that will have you laughing harder than ever one minute, then crying with a water flow harder than Niagara falls the next, then This Is Going To Hurt is the one for you.

Many shows the BBC churn out are often mediocre, in my opinion. They tell similar stories and usually focus on true crime or morbid themes. Truth be told, I'd had my fair share of starting BBC series and giving up after one or two episodes. That was until this gem came along, and I was instantly hooked.

Loosely based on true stories by Adam Kay, a Junior Doctor-turned-Author, Comedian and national treasure, the storyline of This Is Going To Hurt is a TV adaptation of his award-winning book with the same title.

While working as a Junior Doctor, the Author specialised in 'obs & gyne' (obstetrics and gynaecology), working primarily on a labour ward. Before even seeing the show or reading his book, it already sounded like something that would provide barrels of entertainment and a wide range of interesting stories from his time there. And thankfully, this is very much the case.

The casting of the show is also spot on, with award-winning Actor Ben Whishaw portraying Adam Kay, Alex Jennings playing his consultant and Ambika Mod playing Shruti, an overwhelmed Trainee Doctor trying to find her feet in the world of the NHS.

The series didn't seem as funny as the book, and it had a much darker feel to it. However, after looking into it further, it became evident the TV adaptation was only similar to the book and didn’t stick to the text completely meaning it’s not the same in every detail.

I would strongly advise anyone to give this series a watch, if not to enjoy a good few episodes but to educate yourself on the lives those lead in the NHS.
