REVIEW: Daisy Jones and The Six - The fictional band that’s topping the charts

This week, the first three episodes of the long-awaited TV series, Daisy Jones and The Six, dropped on Prime Video. The series is an adaptation of the bestselling book by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The all-star cast includes Sam Claflin and Elvis’ granddaughter Riley Keough, the series has caused excitement for many people. But so far, does it live up to the book?

The series follows an up and coming band in the 70’s - we watch them go from a newly formed group to going on worldwide tours. After a sold-out show at Chicago's Soldier Field, they called it quits; now, decades later, the band members agree to reveal the truth. It has sex, drugs and everything else you would expect from a behind the scenes look into the lives of a famous rock band.

In my opinion, the first three episodes have been a great introduction to the characters and their world, setting the next three episodes up to give even more. Like the book, the series is shot in a documentary style as we go from seeing the characters now, answering questions and talking to the camera, then we flashback to the actual moments they’re talking about and see the drama unfold. It works really well and makes the series easy to follow. As well as the leads, Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin) and Daisy Jones (Riley Keough), the supporting characters were casted perfectly and have their own storylines alongside which keeps it interesting.

Though, while I’m enjoying the storyline, the best part of the series for me is the music. Alongside the TV show, a whole Daisy Jones and the Six album called Aurora has been released. Made up of 11 songs, it’s become the first album by a fictional band to hit number one on the iTunes charts. It’s such a great addition and really helps to bring the band to life, not to mention the songs are all actually really good and have a Fleetwood Mac vibe to them. Considering both Riley Keough and Sam Claflin have never sung professionally before, they have done a brilliant job.

Overall, I would really recommend this series to everyone, regardless of if they’ve read the book or not. You can stream Daisy Jones and The Six on Amazon Prime Video and the next three episodes will be released on Friday March 10.
