Mother's Day Movies

As Mother’s Day approaches on Sunday 10th March, it’s time to plan a special celebration to honour the incredible women who have shaped our lives. As we prepare to show our appreciation for mothers, grandmothers, and other maternal figures, what better way is there to express our love and gratitude, and celebrate the spirit of motherhood than with a cosy movie marathon?

Mamma Mia! (2008)

The perfect film to kick start this movie marathon is a classic: Mamma Mia! With the perfect blend of music, romance, and a strong mother-daughter bond, let the enchanting tunes of ABBA and the beautiful Greek Island backdrop whisk you away. This joyous musical tells the story of Sophie and her vibrant, independent mother, Donna (portrayed by Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep). The film is a celebration of love, laughter, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and daughter. This nostalgic and heartwarming musical is the perfect start, if you enjoy it you could even give the sequel “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” a watch!

Brave (2012)

“Brave” takes us on a journey through mediaeval Scotland, offering a unique take on the mother-daughter dynamic as Princess Merida seeks to forge her own pathway whilst navigating the expectations of her mother, Queen Elinor. This animated Disney film explores the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship but also emphasises the importance of understanding and acceptance. Brave is a heartwarming addition to your movie marathon! If you’re into animated movies, this film may be the one for you!

Freaky Friday (2003)

If you’re interested in comedies, this one's for you! “Freaky Friday” offers a humorous take on the challenges of understanding and appreciating each other’s perspectives. Starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, the film follows the adventures of a mother and daughter who magically swap bodies for a day. This unexpected twist allows for an exploration of the trials of both adolescence and adulthood, ultimately emphasising the importance of empathy and communication between a child and their mother.

As you plan your Mother’s Day movie marathon, also consider creating a cosy atmosphere with blankets, snacks, and perhaps even a special homemade meal. These movies, each with its own unique take on motherly love, will undoubtedly evoke emotions and create a deeper appreciation for the incredible women whom we see as our motherly figures. So, whether you’re dancing along to ABBA tunes or shedding a tear during a particularly heartwarming scene, let this Mother’s Day be a celebration of love, laughter, and the timeless bond between motherly figures and their children.
