Influencers: the good, the bad and the ugly

When their perfect life is fuelled by beauty hacks, reformer pilates and expensive green juices, it’s no wonder influencers can seem really intimidating. And, undeniably the idea of these people becoming role models for young people seems slightly warped. Basically, the world of influence is a bit of a minefield. A topic which lots of people have different opinions on. For instance, what is the difference between an influencer, content creator or minor celebrity? Maybe they are all the same.

Personally, I’m a hypocrite. Because whilst I see the dangers of influencing, and how they can often push unrealistic standards onto people, I still love scrolling on social media platforms.

However, I do make a conscious effort to watch content which uplifts me and feels genuine. Be that through body positivity, funny story times or days in my life. I really enjoy the realness. But how real is that realness, I suppose is the question.

TikTok is the official sponsor of the Met Gala for the second year in a row. Last year sparked controversy with TikTokers like Addison Rae and Dixie D’Amelio in attendance. But despite the outrage, it doesn’t seem like that will be the last time influencers walk the prestigious carpet. Not to mention the sensation, which is Molly Mae, who simply has to look in the direction of a product and it will sell out within minutes.

One thing I will say- influencers are for sure moving towards a new world of realness. It is not all about conveying a problem free, perfectly aesthetic life. Lots of people show their funny personalities, wacky styles or hilarious story times and gain loyal followings, for simply being the authentic them. Take GK Barry for example, she went viral overnight for simply being her authentic, funny self.

Overall, it’s important to take anything said by influencers with a pinch of salt.

Spoiler alert: they probably don’t drink kombucha every day, or order a new gym set every week, and they certainly don’t possess a special power which makes them more, or less worthy than any other ‘normal’ person. Embracing influencers could lead to you discovering some content which you adore. Besides, it’s quite nice to find inspiration from these ordinary people, rather than traditional celebrities who feel so far out of our realm.
