How to look after your mental health whilst studying

While uni life is enjoyable, all students are faced with mental stresses. Academic, peer and financial pressure – you name it, you will know at least one person who's experienced it, or maybe that person is you. Taking the time to improve your mental health will undoubtedly improve your university experience.

So, how can we adjust ourselves to look after our mental health?

1. Socialise effectively. We all know the development of social media has had an impact on the rise of mental health problems. Students are active in these virtual worlds but some are fearful of face-to-face conversation, known as social phobia. This can easily cause mental stress because the person is afraid of confiding their troubles with anyone. Socialising with people who have common interests and in places where you feel relaxed, like a local park, rather than only immersing yourself in the world of technology, will be very helpful to your mental health.

2. List regularly. It is a good idea to make a to-do lists and timetables which help you review yesterday, remember today and plan tomorrow, especially when it comes to busy periods of time at university. Deleting an event you've completed will bring you a sense of achievement, and will minimise your academic and peer pressure. I find this particularly helpful and when I achieve my bigger goals, I treat myself – whether it's an item of clothing I've been longing for, a day out, or a nice meal, it motivates me to complete my future goals.

3. Introspect actively. Sometimes it is necessary for you to face up to your own mental health. When you come to terms with the fact you are troubled by something in daily life, you can positively and actively solve it and move forward. Setting aside an afternoon each week for you to spend time with yourself and doing things you enjoy may not seem 'productive', but looking after your mental state is more important than staying on top of your studies.
